As we stare down the end of the year, New Year resolution and ‘fresh start’ buzz is everywhere. All the talk is how New Year’s is going to be a turning point and goals are ready to be kicked off with a flourish when it gets here. The excitement is about finally doing it all right and by gosh, it is going to start on January 1st!!
Blah, blah, blah.
I don’t think it makes me jaded to say the idea of a magical calendar day allowing (expecting?) us to wake up to perfect new habits and the determination to do it different there is a tad ridiculous. Expecting overnight change like some switch has been flicked is overreaching, to say the least.
Don’t get me wrong. I am glad there is a built-in holiday promoting the opportunity for positive changes in our lives. I’m not downplaying the importance of goals or improvements in habits and attitudes. But why just talk now and wait till January to start?
The New Year is a catalyst for change, but the hype getting there almost sets us up for failure. Research shows it takes about 3 weeks to establish a new habit. Since that is about the time we have left this year, we had better get busy. Small changes now, working out the new plan, taking this time to practice, checking to see if things really work like they should - this could mean the actions you want to alter could well in a set routine by the time you are writing the new year on your checks.
Some of my goals are remain the same: get more focused, keep better track of the details. I thought through and created a new system a couple weeks ago, complete with color coordinated tabs, notebooks, and even new shelves on my desk. I stared at it for two weeks. Then it dawned on me…what I am waiting for? Why not start now? Test the flow, get in a routine, working out the kinks before my busy January gets here. Start now!
I am finding this “now” philosophy is spilling over. The new year flyers and catalogs are starting to trickle in, and “new product” buttons are starting to show up on supplier’s web sites. I am not waiting to look. I am clicking on tabs, thumbing thru fliers, and forwarding information and samples as soon as they come in. Normally I have a pile of that stuff around thinking I am going to get to it. That never happens. So what am I waiting for?
I am not going to suggest a check list to jump start your next year. We all work in amazingly different ways and with a little thought, you know what is best for you. But I hope you do have plans for the new year. Do some things better. Do some things different. Mostly though, DON’T WAIT! Start now! This next few weeks of prep could mean the difference between new and improved New Year success or another year of the same ole, same ole.
It’s time to make a change….now. Go for it!
